On Passion

A year ago I gave my kitchen staff the day off and cooked a Passover meal for about 100 friends and relatives.  It was a great moment, the restaurant was back open, Spring was in the air and a long lasting family Seder tradition was restored.  We were privileged to have 2 Rabbis and a leading Jewish educator, who happen to be my cousins, run the Seder.  This year my cousins are having a more intimate Seder and Thai Rock will operate a normal day.

As it happens, this year, Good Friday and the first night of Passover coincide and there is an interesting debate whether the Last Supper was a Passover Seder.  The two holidays have important parallels.  Jews are celebrating their freedom from slavery and their exodus from Egypt to Israel, the Promised Land.  Christians are celebrating another kind of exodus, that from the dead (his crucifixion) to eternal life (resurrection) with God with the belief that God will judge the world in righteousness.  Both ideas convey the various prior hardships and sacrifices made for future generations to have a better life.

I'm not a theologian or expert on any religion, so if I don't have it right, please don't be offended with my ignorance, but do allow me to point out that as I see it, a core goal of both Judaism and Christianity is to help us attain a good and better life, one that includes kindness, generosity, reason, forgiveness and love.  I will truly miss the absence of this year's Passover Seder, but I will celebrate, as I do each day and employee these core goals shared by so many religions.

This weekend, with all the holidays, we have a lot to celebrate and we are going to do so in Thai Rock fashion with great food and live music starting with contemporary jazz arrangements Friday night by the William Humphrey Quartet, followed by Blues legend Bobby Radcliff from the bands Roomful of Blues and the original Blues Brothers and end the weekend with Singer/Songwriter James Tristan Redding.

Happy Holidays and be well,

Robert :~)
