On Passion

What is it that make us do the things we do?  How do we know how we’ll react before a situation arises?  As I look back on 2013, a year that began on the heels of devastation, but also with the inspiration of hope, community solidarity and promise of a better future, I realize that the gravity of our circumstances has not even begun to settle in yet.  This has been an emotionally charged year with both tears of joy and sorrow and laughter of pain and happiness.

From the cold days without heat or hot water, sitting around the fireplace, having a drink (or two) with friends huddled together, sharing the moments together to seeing a community embrace itself and work together for common goals.

I have witnessed the goodness of the people here in the Rockaways and others engaged in selfless, challenging and difficult tasks, I’ve marveled and rejoiced in the demonstration of human spirit and through each and every hurdle, a somewhat stronger, yet still gentle soul remained.

I look forward to 2014, a new year, a new beginning a better Rockaways.  Last year was the year we wondered finding our way out of the desert, the desert of despair, of loss and broken promises.  Next year we will find ourselves again, next year we will no longer be the forgotten people, next year our beaches will be stronger, next year I pray for all those still vacated to return and next year we will continue working together, helping each other and returning to normal, only better.

Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous new year – Rockaway Strong,

Robert & The Thai Rock Family
